Event Spotlight : The Allendale Challenge
35 Years of Bog, Hills, and Laughs!
Some of you will know that I am spending some of my retirement time as a volunteer for North of Tyne Mountain Rescue.
On Saturday 11th April the Allendale Challenge is back for its 35th year, and it’s a great event. Covering 26 miles of the North Pennines, this route offers the very best of our local landscape: rugged tracks, the occasional bog, minimal tarmac, and great views.
Whether you’re looking to hammer out a fast trail marathon, enjoy a scenic long-distance walk, or do a bit of both, it’s a fantastic day out in the hills.
Why this event? Supporting North of Tyne Mountain Rescue
Beyond the personal challenge, this event is the primary fundraiser for the North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team (NOTMRT). In the UK, Mountain Rescue is powered entirely by volunteers and funded solely by donations. Even with a volunteer crew, the annual running costs are significant. The team covers the entire Northumbria Police region, providing life-saving services including:
Wilderness Search: Finding lost hikers on the Cheviots.
Specialist Rescue: Handling steep ground and technical rope recoveries.
Emergency Support: Assisting police, fire, and ambulance services with water rescues and locating vulnerable individuals.
Let’s get some black and blue out there!
By signing up, you aren't just getting a great day in the hills; you’re directly keeping this essential service on the hills. Whether you're chasing a PB or just enjoying the North Pennine views, why not give it a go this year. www.allendalechallenge.com for sign-up and more information.
