A bright and sunny morning saw 8 ladies braving the chilly morning to take part in an off-road duathlon at Kirkley Cycles, Thorneyford Farm. The event was one of Triathlon England’s Go Tri 1000 Events aimed at inspiring 1,000 new triathletes from across the nation to take part in a GO TRI Event over the dedicated weekend of 25th/26th April.
For the vast majority of the participants, this event was indeed their first triathlon event. Most were very nervous at the start but the nerves soon faded once the event started off onto the first run which was one lap around the perimeter of the lower field. Miriam did a fantastic run and was first back into transition and quickly changed to the bike. The bike course was very tough, very bumpy and eight laps needed to be completed. After a couple of laps everyone got the hang of the bike route and settled into a nice routine. Bronwen was absolutely flying around the course and managed to overtake quite a few, you can tell she does cyclocross. Miriam was first back into transition again and onto the second run which was a repeat of the first run. Miriam led all the way and was the first to cross the line in 30mins 14seconds, second place went to Steph in a time of 33mins 48sec and Natalie in third place with 35min 31sec.
It was lovely to see everyone absolutely buzzing at the end having thoroughly enjoying themselves. I think everyone said they’d be back to do more of the Go Tri’s from Ponteland leisure centre. We’ve converted some more newbies into doing triathlon events! Once you try it, you’ll enjoy it and want to do more! Why not Go Tri it yourself?
