Kielder Open Water Swim

Only me taking part in this one for Ponteland Tri so just a quick report.

There were three distance available to race:- 1 mile, 2.4 miles (“Iron” distance) and a massive 10 kilometres with feed stations. Presumably the feed stations are a bit like how they feed a seal at the zoo so sensibly I opted for the 2.4 mile option. I also wanted to gauge how I would feel afterwards if I then had to then immediately cycle 112 miles (as I will next year).

The weather was perfect, the event was well marshalled and the race was nowhere near as boisterous as an open water swim is when part of a full triathlon. The water was a refreshing 13.5 degrees but the chance to swim in the clear calm waters more than made up for the numb feet and fingers despite wearing shoes and gloves. Mrs L probably had a tougher time watching as she had to fend off the entire midge population of Northumberland on the shoreline!

Definitely recommended to other members for next year. Although I wouldn’t go for the non-wetsuit approach of some competitors!

Great North Run – Sun 13th Sept

Race report will be added once available from one of the runners. For now just club results posted below. Fantastic to see 41 members of the club completing the race. ( If your result isn’t in the list below just let me know and I’ll add it. ) We had 28 in GNR 2014 so a good increase in participation for Ponteland Runners.

Club Championship Update

Here is the latest on the Club Championship (points table and spreadsheet) . There has been a great effort by many members in taking part in the qualifying races which is helping to promote the club around the region – well done! The table now has 55 entrants in the Club Championship which is more than half the membership. At the moment John McGargill has a good lead but with several events coming up there is still time for a late surge. The Coastal Run and Jelly 10 were popular long runs but were both tough courses so scores were on the low side; this weekend’s Great North Run is likely to be the best long run for many so I will update the results next week to see how thing change.

Go-Tri Aquabike – Wed 26th August 2015

A windy but bright evening saw the last of the Ponteland Go-tri’s for 2015.  The aquabike format proved less popular than the previous triathlon’s but did give an opportunity to at least a couple of athetes who are injured and can’t run but can swim and cycle at present.

17 participants entered but with two unlucky enough to puncture we had one late finish from Nikki and a DNF from Thomas Wright.

The Ponteland Tri/Ponteland Runners volunteers running the event this time logged the T1 times so the provisional results below show individual discipline and transition times, something we hope to continue for next years Go-tri events.

A massive thankyou to the volunteers for the event, and all who have helped throughout the go-tri’s that we’ve delivered in 2015.  Special mention to Mark & Tina Kelly, David and Sarah Levison, Kelly Hymer, Andy Gowens, John and Fiona McGargill, Mark Carpenter, Paul Holborrow, Richard Low and many others who’ve helped and allowed these events to take place and remain low cost.

A special mention must go to Peter Bartholomew and his colleagues from QE in Gateshead. They have provided a great bunch of participants at each of the events this year, all seem to have had great fun. Provisional Results below,  subject to confirmation as we double check all the timings.

Stamfordham 10k Race Report

The sign in the photograph says “runners in the road” and this was certainly true when four club members took part in the inaugural Stamfordham 10k organised by Run Nation on Wednesday 19th August. It seems you never quite know what you’re going to get with a Run Nation event but this one was very well organised and offered a well marshalled, scenic, flat course. A few spots of rain just before the hooter also helped to cool the temperature for the 176 participants. James Leiper impressively broke the 40 minute barrier to finish 18th overall followed in by John McGargill who was 2nd in his age category (far too polite to state which age group that is). Further down the field there were PB times for both David Levison and Nicky Matthews. Talking afterwards, all four thoroughly enjoyed the race and would recommend it to other club members for future years.
