Northumberlland Tri – Sunday 5th June

Druridge Bay, Northumberland is an ideal place for a triathlon, provided the weather is good. This year, unlike last year, nobody could complain about the weather. Today held many challenges for Ponteland Tri members, it was the last event before tapering for Ironman for David Stroud and Duncan, it was the first standard distance for Mark, John and Tina, and it was the first open water for myself doing the sprint distance along with Richard, David Legg and Danny.

As a nervous open water swimmer I kept out of the way at the mass start and this proved a good plan, it was very crowded cornering at the buoys even after the main field had gone. I managed a steady swim but struggled with removing the wetsuit in T1, lesson is I must learn from others on how to better manage T1. Although given it was my first attempt then maybe a 3 minute T1 isn’t all that bad???

The Sprint started at 08:00 with the standard following quickly at 08:05. With just a 5 minute gap I had the great experience at the end of the swim lap of having the leaders from the standard wave swim straight over the top of me, not fun!! Anyway I survived.

The bike leg was great, conditions were a little breezy by then but nothing to complain about, and the run was a lovely reverse lap of the park run route. Although we had also all found out that the new run route has added a little distance to the 5km on the sprint and the 10km n the standard making them 5.6km and 11.2km respectively.

Sprint results below, fantastic swim times from both Richard and Danny. I have to say I’m really pleased with my swim, it was all about getting round and “ticking the box” of having done open water. I’m encouraged by the performances of many of the other club members and really want to try and crack open water now……

Now the standard, great to see David and Duncan in with such strong performances, obviously ready for the challenge ahead in three weeks. Now I must mention John’s swim time which just shows how well John is swimming now, absolutely brilliant time, and also John’s first standard distance tri. Mark and Tina took their first standard in their stride and both finished looking comfortable and very happy. Well done all.

Picture to the left shows John flying into the finish looking happy and very pleased with his first completed standard distance.

Best finish photo has to go to Tina, see below. Next tri race report will probably be QE, watch out for the details. Hopefully with weather as good as Northumberland.

Alnwick Sprint Triathlon Sunday 15th May 2016

This year Alnwick Tri sold out in under 3 hours which resulted in no Ponteland Tri members having entered initially.  Chris & Sue Heppell registered on the waiting list and it looked like we didn’t have a place until 2 weeks from the event when a couple of late drop-outs enabled us both to enter the event. So unlike previous years Ponteland only had 2 participants.

As always it’s an early start on the Sunday morning for a tri, and with the 40 minute journey the alarm clock was set at 04:45, once everything was ready we headed up to Alnwick for registration and the event briefing at 07:05hrs.

The expected cool conditions were not as bad as forecast and the sun was out for the event. First swimmers were started at 07:40. The swim was 400m this year with the change in the rules around switching lanes reducing Alnwick from it’s traditional 500m swim. The bike route is undulating and even with light winds it always feels windy, and the run heads uphill for the first 1.5miles.

Results below, with Sue finishing 8th in the ladies vets and 89th overall, Chris 9th in mens supervets and 40th overall. I’ll add a couple of photos when available.

Ashington Sprint Tri Mon 2nd May 2016

The forecast looked promising, at least for temperature, but the wind forecast wasn’t good. Looking out the window in the morning, at 05:30 when I woke, saw the trees swaying in the wind and I knew it would be hard work.

Twelve Ponteland Tri members were competing at Ashington so it was going to be a good event for the club. The new leisure center facilities hosted a great new 6 lane pool and as a consequence the run route had moved to Ashington woods and the bike leg had added a little extra distance.

David Stroud brought the club home first with a great time on all three disciplines. Excellent transitions as well shows David certainly has the speed for the short distance even when training for the longer events. Mark Kelly and myself battled with a couple of slower swimmers in our lane who certainly didn’t want to let us past. Eventually Mark, John and myself all exited the pool and headed into transition at about the same time. Mark decided to rebuild his sunglasses and put a few extra layers whilst in transition whereas John and myself headed straight out to battle the wind.

The wind heading west was severe and made the bike leg hard work, ( Not that it seemed to slow David at all….. )

Danny had a mechanical and had to retire during the bike leg, great shame as he’s just getting back to running.  Our newest club member, Christine showed great determination in her first tri with a good showing in all disciplines. Emma finished in a great time, although that’s not how she discribed it at first……. and Tina, who said she couldn’t run managed to run the full 5km.

Viv has a great race but the results need correcting as they don’t, as yet, have her finishing time.

There are more photo’s on our facebook page for anyone interested, just look at the latest album.

Final photo to the left is Viv looking far too happy at the end of her run. Well done Viv.

Run Northumberland “Big 10”

Below is the race report from Kathryn Lawson after a windy outing yesterday…..

Run Northumberland ‘Big 10’ – 10 mile road race starting and finishing at Kirkley Hall.

Having convinced Nicola Matthews to sign up with me for the Big 10 just a few weeks ago, we arrived at Kirkley Hall and were greeted by battering winds, rain, hail stones and a bitterly cold temperature. Great!

‘This is all your fault!!!’ Nicola said as we walked to the start line. We told ourselves how pleased we’d be at the end and that the t shirt would definitely be worth it.  We spotted fellow club member Miv Chahal in the crowd at the start line and wished each other luck. The gun sounded and off we went, out through the grounds of Kirkley Hall and into the countryside.

The first couple of miles quickly went by and a tough climb in the 4th mile lead us into Whalton. The cold, rain and wind hadn’t bothered me too much until we passed through Whalton and then the wind seemed to really pick up. The strong head winds were relentless for the next two miles and I was very relieved when the route finally changed direction. At the 7 mile marker the route once again changed direction and this time the wind was right behind me, just what I needed at this point! With the thought of less than a parkrun to go, the last 3 miles didn’t seem quite as difficult as the earlier miles and soon enough I saw Nicola cheering me on at the finish line.

Just as predicted, we certainly were very pleased once it was all over and we easily managed a smile for the photo. Unfortunately we didn’t see Miv at the end to get a full team photo, he was probably already home and eating his lunch before Nicola and I arrived back at Kirkley Hall.

Chip time results were as follows: Miv Chahal 01:20:59; Nicola Matthews 01:36:57 and Kathryn Lawson 01:41:44.

It was a challenging race but the scenic views and sense of achievement at the end made it all worth it, definitely one for the race diary next year. The only real mishap of the day was Nicola being mistakenly announced as the second placed female, maybe next time Nicola!
